My New Year’s Resolution

As human beings we have such high expectations for new calendar years. They are a symbol of starting over; getting a clean start for free. We come up with resolutions and ditch old habits. We vow to become better people and to leave our mark on the world. Even though most of this is short lived, it’s a good practice.

This year, 2018, I want to be happy. As cliché as that might sound, I am choosing happiness as my number one priority. 2017 was a year that tremendously challenged me as a person. Numerous events that occurred in my personal, school and home life impacted me as a person. Most of the negative aspects, as well as the positive, of 2017 have greatly shaped my character today.

This year I also want to put myself first. Part of achieving happiness is through being selfish. I want to take care of my physical health as well as my mental health. I want to do things that I deem necessary to positively impact my life both in the short run and, especially, in the long run.

2017, you’ve been good to me at times but I’m glad that you’re over. 2018, come at me.
